Graffiti – Art or Vandalism?

Graffiti is defined as writings or drawings scribbled, scratched or sprayed on a wall or other surface in a public place. But can it be considered art or is it a form of vandalism and must therefore be considered illegal? This has been a highly controversial issue for many years as there are solid arguments in favor of each opinion.

Proponents of graffiti believe that it is most certainly a form of art as it is a means by which the artists express their feelings, political opinions or attitudes towards social issues. They claim that it makes our environment more attractive and at the same time can promote social awareness.

On the other hand, a lot of people consider graffiti a crime practiced by gangs and a manifestation of general disregard towards the law. Therefore, they believe it should not be encouraged and must be punished in order to be prevented.

There are a lot of issues to be considered here. What if graffiti is being done after the owner’s authorization or on a deserted old building? And, what if scribbles are made at the back of a bus? Where does art expression end and where does vandalism begin? Quite a lot of things to think about!

  • Watch this TEDx talk on Graffiti and answer the following questions:
    • How can graffiti create positive change in our world?
    • How can a graffiti painting on a school wall influence the whole school community?
    • Can you think of any cases in your town where graffiti has made the environment more welcoming?
    • Would you like something like that to be done on the walls of your school? Do you think it would be respected by students and not be destroyed?
  • Read this article on Graffiti and discuss the following questions:
    • What connection does the writer make between graffiti and street ads?
    • In what way is, according to the article, graffiti much more preferable to street ads?
  • Now, read this New York Times article on Graffiti and identify the reasons the writer is against graffiti being practiced in public places. What are the examples she gives to support her opinion?
  • Write an article on the following topic: Can graffiti be considered a legitimate form of art and therefore be encouraged or should it be regarded as an illegal action defacing public property? Justify your opinion with reasons and examples.
