Present Simple-Present Continuous Activities

Beginner, Grammar, Speaking, Writing / Thursday, March 15th, 2018

The following are some beginners’ activities to revise simple action verbs and the use of Simple Present and Present Continuous. There are also flashcards provided to practise asking and answering questions in these two tenses.

Activities

  • Using these action verbs flashcards the teacher asks the class questions about what the people in the cards do every weekend.
  • Now, in pairs or small groups the students use the same flashcards to ask each other Simple Present questions beginning with “Do you … every weekend?”. They, then, give short answers.
  • At this stage, the teacher uses the flashcards to ask the class what they are doing this weekend.
  • Now, in pairs or groups the children ask each other Present Continuous questions beginning with “Are you … on Saturday/Sunday?”. They, then, give short answers.
  • As a follow-up activity students are asked to write a paragraph about what they usually do at weekends and what they are doing this weekend.
